Some time ago I knew a witness who loved to argue the trinity with people. At some point in the argument he would invariably hold up three fingers and ask: “one plus one plus one, how many does that make?”. Since he was not an exemplary listener he would immediately answer the question himself with an emphatic “THREE, not ONE”.
Let’s try the same logic to assess our latest teaching on Matt 24:34.
1 + 1 = ?
According to every conceivable avenue of mathematics and logic the answer is obvious. Apparently an average 4 year old is able to solve this most elementary of questions with the correct answer of 2.
However, according to official doctrine pertaining to “this generation” the answer can be 1 if required.
I continue to believe that there are many good reasons for remaining one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. However we must acknowledge that we have reached the ludicrous point where we are required to literally hold the conviction that …
1 + 1 = 1.
Unfortunately this is only one example among many that demonstrates how far down the slippery slope we have gone in being required to surrender our God given power of reason.
Drop the indefensible doctrine of 1914, and the “generation” problem resolves itself. We would never require further revisions in order to try to salvage an understanding that works. The generation that sees “all these things” will know that Jesus is “near at the doors” and “will not pass away” without seeing the fulfilment of the promise. (Matt 24:32-34)
