About This Forum
In 2008 and again in 2010, The Watchtower published a new and radical interpretation of the meaning of “this generation” as found at Matthew 24:34. (w08 2/15 p. 23 par. 10-15; w10 4/15 p. 10 par. 13-15) This has had a profound effect on many Jehovah’s Witnesses including those of us who founded this forum.
Changes to our understanding of Mt 24:34 are nothing new. In fact, the doctrinal understanding concerning “this generation” has changed on average once every decade counting from the 1960s. Still, throughout that time period most of us believed our leadership was well intentioned and those regular “refinements”—as we liked to call them—were merely the result of a too-eager desire to uncover Scriptural truth. However, all that changed with the release of the latest interpretation. For the first time, many of us realized that the Governing Body was capable of making stuff up, since the new understanding has no basis in Scripture nor is the definition to be found in any Bible lexicon nor standard dictionary.
As of next year, there will be a 102-year gap between both ends of the still open-ended generation; meaning that using the same logic, we could say that Winston Churchill was part of the generation of Napoleon and the war of 1812. Tell that to a 5th grader and watch his eyes roll up.
“Why did they do this?” was our initial reaction. Were they concerned about flagging growth – even negative growth – as we entered the twenty-first century? Were they looking to rekindle the apparent vigor the organization experienced in the years leading up to 1975? Since the days of Russell, our organization has been focused on means to calculate the advent or coming of Jesus. This is, evidently, just another attempt at achieving that goal.
Nevertheless, it underscores a more serious problem; something of concern for all sincere Jehovah’s Witnesses: The attempt to calculate the time of the end flies in the face of clear scriptural direction.
“It does not belong to you to know the times or seasons that the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction.” (Ac 1:7)
“On this account, you too prove yourselves ready, because the Son of man is coming at an hour that you do not think to be it.” (Mt 24:44)
Considering the amount of JW doctrine that hinges on end-times calculations, this latest attempt at concocting a false sense of urgency raises a disturbing question: If one cornerstone of our beliefs is false, what else is wrong?
Following the Bible counsel to “make sure of all things; hold fast to what is fine,” and to “not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God,” we began a journey like that of the ancient Beroeans who “carefully examined the Scriptures daily” to see if what they were being taught was true. (1 Th 5:21; 1 Jo 4:1; Ac 17:11)
As time went by and our investigation deepened, we were shocked to our core at the extent of the error we uncovered.
We came to realize that we had been remiss in our compliance with the Bible command to carefully examine all things we are taught. Disobedience to God is always a bad thing that leads to suffering. We wanted to correct the mistakes of our past, so this web site was first formed for that purpose. However, over the past few years, it has become so much more.
We are not starting a new religion. Christianity is our religion. This site, and its sister site, serve to provide honest-hearted Jehovah’s Witnesses with a forum for the free and respectful interchange of research with other like-minded brothers and sisters around the world. We want to examine everything we’ve been taught in the light of Scripture and determine what is true and what is not. Additionally, we wish to go beyond the confines of our organizational pedagogy and deepen our understanding of God’s inspired word.
This is not a forum for opinionated criticism of the members and leaders of Jehovah’s Witnesses, nor any other Organized Religion for that matter. Jesus pointed out the falsehood and hypocrisy of the Jewish leadership of his day, but he didn’t engage in personal attacks on individuals. Likewise, our research has and will continue to put us at odds with established JW doctrine, but we will not shy from stating the truth and unmasking falsehood in imitation of our Lord. Nevertheless, it is our goal that any dissenting views we publish here will be done with all due respect to those teaching contrary Bible interpretations.
The research methodology we now use is described here.
